Joe Stewart had trouble sleeping due to his phone

Sleep

In January Apple hit the headlines with their latest iOS update, which promised to make products sleep-friendly.

A new feature called Night Shift will adjust colour balance of an iPad or iPhone's screen during night hours. Phones will use geolocation and internal clocks to access the time of sundown. The colours onscreen will then be made warmer, using more oranges and red tones. The hope is to remove blue light which activates your brain.

Joe Stewart , aged 22, struggled to get to sleep. He starting to wonder whether his phone was the cause of this problem as he used to spend a lot of time scrolling through Facebook or Instagram before bedtime.

"I think it was to do with the light, I looked into it and the general colour of the light on smartphones disrupts your body clock because it's too close to daylight or sunshine" said Joe.

"I suppose phones have become so normalised (to totally scary levels) but it is so unnatural to be staring at a bright light in a dark room" he added.

He decided to download an app called Twilight (for Android), which recalibrates the colours of a smartphone screen, meaning some of the blue light is reduced.

"Things are a lot better since downloading the app, unless it's some kind of placebo affect! The light is now a lot more comfortable to look at and I seem to be sleeping fine now, I really really like the app" he said.
